Kids in Need of Desks

Education is a child’s passport to a brighter future. For girls in particular, education offers the chance for independence and a healthier life. Girls who are educated are less likely to be exploited, less likely to fall victim to trafficking, less likely to be infected with HIV, and less likely to die during childbirth. An educated woman’s children are also more likely to survive and stay healthy.

In Malawi, only 7% of girls complete their education; most drop out by the time they reach puberty. In rural areas of Malawi, girls make up only 9% of all secondary school students. One reason for high drop-out rates is the cost: unlike primary education, secondary education isn't free. In areas with no secondary school nearby, girls have to travel long distances each day or pay for their own room and board. In a country where more than 40% of the population lives on less than a dollar a day, the cost of a girls’ secondary education—tuition, rent, transportation, books, a uniform, and other materials—is prohibitive for most families.

Join the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and MSNBC's "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" in an effort to provide scholarships for 2,000 Malawian girls for all four years of secondary school. Priority will be given to girls from rural areas of Malawi who are most in danger of missing out on an education. Local Parent Teacher Associations will identify those most in need, including orphans and other vulnerable children.

Just $177 provides one year of a girls’ education and includes tuition, room and board, text books, transportation, a school uniform, and learning supplies.
